Statistics Café: Playing in everyone’s backyard

Date: Thursday September 23, 2021

Time: 19.30-21.30

Location: Café Vergulde Kruik (Haarlemmerstraat 22), Leiden

What?

The famous statistician John Tukey once said that “the best thing about being a statistician is that you get to play in everyone’s backyard” – statistics is inherently and intrinsically linked with almost every other scientific field. In this Statistics Café three statisticians will speak about their experiences of applying their statistical knowledge to another – sometimes quite unexpected – area.

Speakers

  • Marjan Sjerps (Professor at University of Amsterdam, affiliated with Netherlands Forensic Institute) | Forensic statistics: “We have a match. Now what?”
  • Erik-Jan van Kesteren (Assistant professor at Utrecht University) | Get off my lawn! How to avoid trespassing in multidisciplinary collaboration
  • Valentina Masarotto (Assistant professor at Leiden University) | Statistics and sound articulation in Mandarin

For whom?

Everyone is welcome to this event – no prior statistical knowledge is assumed. Drinks are included, but make sure to sign up beforehand: there is a maximum number of attendees. We hope to see you there!
