Causes and Consequences

Date: Thursday April 7th, 2022

Time: 19.30-21.30

Location: Galerie Café Leidse Lente (Haagweg 4, Leiden)

What?

Statistics Cafés are informal gatherings where 2-3 speakers give a talk about a topic related to statistics. These Cafés are free of charge (even better, the first drink is included – you only need to sign up!) and are open to everyone, regardless of your level of statistical background.

The theme of this edition is: Causes and Consequences. It’s the first thing that is taught in every statistics 101-class: correlation does not imply causation! But if correlation does not prove causation, is there anything that can? Which assumptions do we rely on, and what if these are not met? What is the big deal in the difference between correlation and causation anyway? And can statistical learning methods help with causal inference?

Speakers

  • Oisín Ryan (Postdoctoral researcher at the Methodology and Statistics department at Utrecht University) | What paradox? Causal models as a remedy for statistical confusion
  • Bart Eggen (PhD candidate statistics at TU Delft) | Sensitivity analysis in causal inference
  • Jesse Krijthe (Assistant professor in the Pattern Recognition & Bioinformatics group TU Delft) | Causality, statistics & machine learning

For whom?

Everyone is welcome to this event – no prior statistical knowledge is assumed. One free drink is included, but make sure to sign up beforehand: there is a maximum number of attendees. We hope to see you there!

The VVSOR is the Dutch Society for Statistics and Operations Research. For students it’s free to become a member: as a member, you will be informed of many more interesting events like these! Find more info here. You can also sign up for the YS newsletter here.
