Workshop: Animate your data

Communicating scientific findings clearly is essential. But how do you ensure your message lands and sticks? Animation is a powerful and often underused tool in science communication. An animated graph captures attention, guides the viewer, and tells a story in a way that static images simply cannot.

In this workshop you will learn:

  • why animation is such an effective communication tool, starting from the question of how our brain processes information,
  • how to use animation in data visualization: from showing change over time to guiding attention and telling a story,
  • how to create a short stop motion animation of a graph.

Speaker: Marcel Jansen

Marcel has a background in biomedical sciences (PhD) and combines his scientific knowledge with a passion for graphic design and animation. From that combination he founded Ziehoe, a studio specialising in making (complex) information visual. He makes scientifically and socially relevant information both accessible and impactful.

Location: Utrecht University, Martinus J. Langeveldgebouw
Requirements: A charged smartphone with the Stop Motion Studio app (free version available, or paid version for €6.99). Please install it before you attend the workshop.
